US Army Soldier Accused of Hacking Trump and Harris Phone Records

A US Army soldier faces charges for allegedly hacking phone records of Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, raising concerns over privacy and national security.

A U.S. Army soldier, Cameron John Wagenius, 20, has been charged with selling confidential phone records. Federal authorities in Texas filed two counts against him on December 20 for unlawfully transferring confidential phone record information. The indictment, unsealed this week, has drawn widespread attention.

Wagenius was stationed at Fort Cavazos, Texas, though his military rank was not specified in court records. Authorities allege that he used an online identity, “Kiberphant0m,” which has been associated with several high-profile data breaches. Among these incidents was the Snowflake data breach and claims of hacking phone records belonging to President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris. This information was reported by Reuters, citing cybersecurity journalist Brian Krebs.

In November, alleged AT&T call logs for Trump and Harris surfaced online. However, The Verge noted that the authenticity of these call logs has not been verified. The indictment did not provide specific details about the hacking itself, focusing instead on the charges of selling confidential phone records.

According to the indictment, Wagenius is accused of unlawfully offering confidential phone records for sale on the internet. While the case remains under investigation, this revelation has raised concerns about data security and the misuse of sensitive information.

A spokesperson for Fort Cavazos confirmed the arrest, stating, “We are aware of the arrest of a Fort Cavazos soldier. III Armored Corps will continue to cooperate with all law enforcement agencies as appropriate.”

This case highlights the growing challenges of cybersecurity and the risks posed by individuals with access to sensitive information. As the investigation unfolds, federal authorities are expected to delve deeper into the extent of the breaches and the potential implications of the leaked information.

Wagenius’s alleged involvement in this case underscores the need for stricter measures to safeguard personal and confidential data, particularly when such information could have significant consequences for national security. The charges against him serve as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and accountability in handling sensitive information.

The case is ongoing, and additional details are likely to emerge as authorities continue their investigation.
