PITT OHIO Leads the Charge Towards Zero Emissions

PITT OHIO, headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is making strides towards sustainability by revolutionizing its energy consumption practices. One of the standout initiatives is the implementation of microgrids at two of its terminals, utilizing wind and solar energy to power various operations.

Innovating for a Greener Future

PITT OHIO gained attention in March when it became the first fleet in the United States to integrate Freightliner’s electric M2 into its Cleveland-based LTL business.

However, the company’s commitment to environmental stewardship extends beyond vehicle electrification. The Cleveland terminal is home to a pioneering renewable energy microgrid, powered by eight wind turbines and 1,500 solar panels.

Jim Maug, Director of Building Maintenance and Property Management at PITT OHIO, highlighted the company’s comprehensive approach to sustainability.

“We embrace wind, solar, and alternative energy as part of our ethos,” Maug emphasized. “But equally important are initiatives like using post-consumer recycled materials, biodegradable cleaning products, and implementing LED lighting.”

Driving Progress

The journey towards renewable energy began in 2012 with solar installations at PITT OHIO’s East Windsor, New Jersey, terminal. Collaborating with The University of Pittsburgh’s Swanson School of Engineering, the company explored direct current (DC) energy through wind turbines and solar panels.

This collaboration led to the establishment of a state-of-the-art laboratory within the Pittsburgh terminal, enabling research into renewable energy technologies.

Partnering with WindStax Energy, PITT OHIO developed a ZeroFirst high voltage DC microgrid, seamlessly integrating solar and wind power generation with battery storage. The microgrid not only powers lighting loads throughout the facility but also provides backup integration with utility power.

Overcoming Challenges

While the microgrid represents a significant leap towards decarbonization, challenges remain. Justine Russo, PITT OHIO’s Director of Sustainability & Business Intelligence, highlighted the limitations of renewable energy sources.

“Our aim is to power electric trucks solely with renewables,” Russo explained. “However, the substantial power requirements of these vehicles present a logistical challenge.”

Despite obstacles, PITT OHIO remains steadfast in its commitment to advancing sustainable practices. Maug stressed the importance of community collaboration and technological innovation in driving progress.

“Addressing the energy challenge necessitates collective action,” Maug affirmed. “It’s about leveraging diverse expertise and resources to forge a path towards a greener future.”
