In recent years, California has become the primary state from which people are choosing to move away, outpacing New York, New Jersey, and Illinois, as revealed by a survey conducted by ConsumerAffairs.
According to the report, around 17,000 individuals have relocated from California, while just over 7,000 have moved into the state, making it the frontrunner in outbound migration. On the flip side, New York, holding the second spot, has seen notably fewer people leaving.
ConsumerAffairs conducted an analysis of data from over 143,000 users spanning from January 2023 to March 2024, uncovering North Carolina as the state experiencing the most significant increase in movers.
Meanwhile, states in the Southern U.S., such as South Carolina, Florida, Tennessee, and Texas, have observed a considerable influx of new residents.
The study’s insights illuminate a shift in preferences among individuals seeking better quality of life, stronger community ties, and greater opportunities beyond California’s borders. Michael Basch, founder and general partner at Atento Capital in Oklahoma, emphasized the allure of regions outside California for those prioritizing aspects like starting a family and making a meaningful impact.
It’s essential to note that while these migration trends are evident, they may not precisely mirror population growth or decline in respective states, as highlighted by the study’s reliance on migration data from the U.S. Census Bureau.
As Californians venture out in search of new prospects, the dynamics of migration continue to mold demographic landscapes across the United States.
